How to decorate the fireplace mantel

I find that the fireplace mantel is one of the most annoying things to decorate! What do you put up there without making it seem cluttered?? First you have to decide what style you like. Do you like symmetry and balance with matching accessories? Or do you have more of an eclectic eye (like me)..  The mantel below has two tall vases on either side + two matching floral arrangements, creating that cohesive look & bringing symmetry to the space. The sunburst mirror above the mantel emphasizes the focal point that is the fireplace.

You could also use a color throughout the design of the space. Like black & gold shown below. Even though the accessories don’t match perfectly, the mantel still looks pulled together because you are sticking to one or two colors.

Again this mantel looks pulled together because of the color theme  – browns, gold and cream. Using colors to create a cohesive look is my favorite, since I don’t like accessories to be matching and perfect looking.

Some modern fireplaces don’t have mantels

You can still add interest with framed art & antlers/faux deer head – here’s a deer head I found at Zgallerie – Pretty cute!

This photo collage above the fireplace mantel is so awesome!! Seriously cutest idea. I have my own little DIY project coming up that involves a photo collage. I’ll keep you posted!

What fireplace mantel decor ideas do you like? My fireplace mantel is in need of some TLC, so I’m open to any ideas/suggestions you have!

You could always go super simple with a bold sunburst mirror

I think that if you do decide to go minimal on the decor, you should have a color on the wall or wallpaper/stencil. That way your mantel doesn’t look unfinished or plain

Hope this helps give you some direction in your mantel decorating adventures! 🙂

My weekend + Our living room before & after pics!!

I had such an amazing weekend! I spent Saturday with a couple of friends up in Sonoma. One of my bffs Allison & wedding vendor friends Erin & Yasmin were putting on a wedding event/fair called the Lab Event at Cline Cellars Winery – which just so happened to be right across the street from where we got married! This event was unlike any wedding fair I’d ever been to. It was honestly more like a party than anything else. Great food. great wine. dancing. fashion show + all the pretty wedding details made by local wedding vendors. The girls did an incredible job! Honestly it kind of made me want to re-plan my wedding. Well……… not really. Ha!

Now on to our living room update  – as promised I took some much better pictures of our living room!!

Well let me first remind you what the living room used to look like

{BEFORE}
Notice the horrific ceiling fan in the mirror.

{AFTER}

Ta-dah!! The sofa is from Zgallerie – Oscar Sofa, vintage chandelier is from the Alameda Point Antique Faire – $70

Bronze nailhead trim & turned legs

If you are considering the Oscar Sofa for your home, I definitely recommend it. It’s timeless, chic and oh so glamorous! The soft cushy pillows make it ridiculously comfortable. This is the perfect couch if you are looking for pretty & practical (well besides the white fabric.)

We painted the aqua accent wall with Benjamin Moore’s Bird’s Egg. For the sunburst mirror DIY click here + my picture frame gallery wall DIY here.

Modern Linen beige tufted lounge chairs are from Overstock – Super comfortable, in case you were wondering!

Waterfall glass coffee table by Viva Modern is from Ebay

Lattice grey rug is from Pottery Barn Teen. Who would have thought?!

I spray painted this metal table from Pier One with Rust-oleum Metallic Gold Spray Paint

This is what it looked like before

This gorgeous shabby chic Pottery Barn inspired mantel was made by my bff Lizzie & her incredibly talented husband

I purchased this mirrored silver side table from TJ Maxx 4 years ago! It’s crazy how a gorgeous sofa can make everything in the living room suddenly look 100 times better.

I spray painted the vintage milk bottle my mom gave me (she was about to throw them out!) The wood flowers are from my wedding bouquet

So now I’m thinking about getting a mirrored chest of drawers for the corner by the gallery wall. It’s so bare over there.. plus it would be nice to have some extra storage (opps, sorry for the crooked pic!)

I’m thinking something like this

{Via Pinterest}

Thoughts? I could always go the less expensive route – Find something on Craigslist, paint & update the hardware. I just can’t stop thinking about the mirrored chest of drawers! So damn gorg. We’ll see.

Paint Stick Sunburst Mirror DIY

For the longest time I have wanted a huge sunburst mirror to hang over our fireplace mantel. But with all of our money going toward our skyrocketing wedding budget last year, I knew  there was no chance of me purchasing one of these stunning mirrors.

What can I say.. I went a little overboard with the wedding.

A couple of months ago I came across this amazing and super EASY DIY over on Centsational Girl. So finally last Friday night I went to Home Depot and Michaels to pick up all my materials.

{My Shopping List}

Home Depot

  • 16 1- gallon paint sticks –  FREE
  • 16 5- gallon paint sticks – FREE

The guy at the paint counter literally thought I was insane wanting that many paint sticks! I told him it was for a do-it-yourself mirror I was making.. and he thought I was even more crazy.

Michaels

Picture frame 3 pk kit – 3.99

  • 7″ embroidery hoop – 2.49
  • 7″ round mirror – 2.99
  •  Metallic Sahara Gold craft paint by Folk Art – 1.99
  • Metallic Pure Gold craft paint by Folk Art  – 1.99
  • 3 piece paint brush kit – 3.99
  • 11″ square piece of wood – free

Total cost = $18.00

****Update****

I finally got around to sawing the super long paint sticks down, making it much cuter! Here is what the sunburst mirror looks like now:

Read more how I updated the living room here & here

I followed Centsational Girl’s tutorial here. I have to say I am pretty happy with my sunburst mirror and very impressed with myself! I thought I did pretty good for my first DIY home project. It makes such a statement in our living room. Plus how can you beat $18?! It’s a lot less than what you would spend on a store bought Sunburst.

Below is our living room before we updated it eekks!

I love the metallic colors!

So there you have it. What do you think? You can really do any colors you like, to match with your home. Hope you try this too!

Some upcoming projects I am working on include painting and re-covering our dining room chairs & a picture frame gallery wall. Here’s a little sneak peak of what I have been slaving over this week.. sanding and painting. Stay tuned!

Happy Friday & enjoy your weekend

Xoxo,

Baby Fever

There has been a lot of talk recently between Clayton & I about when we will have our first babe. I know I am probably getting ahead of myself but, I can’t help thinking about decorating the most to die for gorgeous nursery! I have so many ideas.. Some of which are a little much for the space we have to use. The room is a tiny 9ft x 11ft, but I am determined to make it work without making it look cluttered.

Something you should know about me? I cannot stand clutter!! Ask my husband. It drives him nuts. Half the time I will be too lazy to actually organize.. so I end up stuffing things into drawers so I don’t have to look at the clutter.

Here is my inspiration for our baby’s room. I’m loving the all white feel – Did I mention I am obsessed with white?

I love the dark wood floors so much. Unfortunately with our cat and  dog, both being blonde… those beautys are out of the question for me.

For me a chandelier is mandatory. Chandeliers just make a room feel so special, and I’m sure our little munchkin will love gazing up at it all the time. I love this one from Horchow. So gorg and unique.

Now for some color! I love white, but I also like a bold print here and there. Color makes the room feel fun and happy. Loving this chevron stripe rug! Overstock has an incredible selection of area rugs. The best part? They are a fraction of the price. Check out this rug from Overstock similar to the rug shown below. Or.. this one

I have had my eye one this gorgeous blue & white medallion rug from Horchow for quite awhile. Found one just like it for half the price at Overstock – score!

I want to incorporate a sunburst mirror into the baby’s nursery.. maybe over the changing table. That could be really cute. These are really pretty!

Gotta have a gorgeous chair! I have had a small obsession with tufted upholstered chairs, couches, headboards.. really anything. So glamorous.

This one from ZGallerie is nice too

Do you have any ideas for decorating your nursery? What colors are you doing??
