OlioBoard Obsessed

I recently came across the most amazing website known to man.. or should I say women. It’s called OlioBoard and I am beyond obsessed. I spent approx 3 hours playing around with the site & designing my ideal home office!

Here’s the gist of how it works; You create your own digital mood/inspiration boards on their site & save them to your profile. A lot of interior designers use this site + regular people who want to design their own space.

 It’s free to join. They do have a pro version that enables you to choose wall colors, add text & use the budget feature, which is $8.99 a month.

All the images you select on the site are fully available for purchase and they list the product’s specifications & prices!! Amazing! You can even upload your own inspiration photos from your computer or photos of your current furniture.

I put this board together for my ideal home office. What do you think?

{Click to enlarge}

It really helps you envision the room you are trying to create.. instead of buying items at stores only to find out that they don’t match your current decor – talk about a major time saver.

DIY Tufted Headboard Tutorial

I have been wanting a headboard in our room for so long. For some reason it was just never something high on the priority list. I also never really found one I was in love with – that wasn’t $1,000+

The other day, I was searching for something on Google and came across this amazing blog and saw that she did an incredible tufted headboard and tutorial.  So I thought, why not give it a try!

Let me first start off by saying that this wasn’t complicated or hard to do, but just takes time! Clay & I did this over a weekend, but you could stretch it out over the week.

The headboard took about 2 days from start to finish. We followed Little Green Notebook’s tutorial exactly.

After doing this myself, I came up with a lot of tips for you, which I will share throughout this post.

{Materials you will need}

Home Depot

  • Pegboard from Home Depot, cut to size. We measured our bed (King size) and had them cut the pegboard 40 inches high x 76 inches wide
  • Spray adhesive
  • Staple gun & staples
  • Mounting hardware to attach headboard to the wall behind the bed

Joann’s Fabric Store

  • 3 inch thick upholstery foam

**Huge Tip** Download the Joann’s app on your smartphone for a 50% off coupon. They have coupons every month for 50% off a single item, plus 20% off your entire purchase. For some reason these pieces of foam are extremely expensive – we would have paid $120 just for the foam!

  • High loft batting
  • 3 1/2 yards (less if your bed is smaller than king size) of whatever fabric you like. Originally I wanted a more velvet blush pink fabric, but we found a light blush pink satin fabric for 50% off, making it only $4.99 a yard!

Here was my inspiration photo

  • 4 inch upholstery needle
  • Waxed button thread

**Tip** I highly recommend using waxed upholstery grade thread, don’t use non-waxed. Half way through the tufting, we ran out of thread, so I went to a different fabric store that was closer to our house. They only had non-waxed thread. It was IMPOSSIBLE to work with. We ending up having to go back to Joann’s to get the waxed stuff anyway. The wax sticks to the fabric and makes it much easier for making knots as well – more on that later.

  • Button making kit + refills 5/8 inch size – enough to make 58 buttons. You can do less if you plan on having less tufts or if you have a smaller headboard.

Total cost $150 – not bad for an upholstered king headboard

Now that you have all your supplies let’s begin!!

First you will need to figure out your tufting pattern – we decided on rows of 11 and 10 buttons, alternating each row

circle where you will make your holes with chalk

then take a sharpie and make dots through the chalk marked holes.

Take the pegboard off and now you have your pattern.

Take a pairing knife and cut out your tuft holes

Now that all your holes are done, use your spray adhesive and glue the foam to the pegboard. Now all the holes will match up and you’re ready for tufting.

**Tip** make sure to let the foam hang off a 1/2 over the pegboard on the top and sides. This will make the edges more cushy and soft looking when you go to staple the fabric around the edges.

Then make your buttons with your kit

This part wasn’t as bad as I was anticipating.. we watched some Oprah & Real Housewives + we had this fatty to keep us company 🙂

Once all your buttons are done

Lay your pegboard, foam, batting &  fabric down – in that order

Take your needle, waxed thread & button

and poke it through your first hole

Pull it through and staple a couple of times. Triple knot the thread around the staple to ensure it doesn’t come loose

And there’s your first tuft! Yeee!

I am so thankful the Little Green Notebook said to start in the middle of all rows and work your way out with the tufts & save the edge tufts for last.

Knowing us, we would have totally botched this part if not for her advice!

After all your tufts are done, staple at the bottom on the foam slightly pushing up when stapling so that your staples aren’t visible.

Then just simply pull fabric tight around all edges and staple to the back!

Attach your mounting hardware & attach to your wall behind your bed & there you go!!

What a difference this pretty headboard makes in our room!

Notice how the tufting starts right at the top of our mattress and the rest hides behind the bed perfectly

Our headboard kind of reminds me of this Pottery Barn one – I think ours is way cuter though and we didn’t have to spend $800 Yay!

What do you think? Are you thinking about making one??

It really makes our bedroom feel so romantic & chic. What do you think of the color?

The best part is, I was about to buy something identical to this headboard for $600 about a year ago. With everything said and done, we spent a total of $150!

Hope you like our headboard as much as we do!

Pinterest Favorites {Wall colors + design}

I’m going to warn you, I have been really into hot pink lately. Like REALLY into it. I am now counting the days until we can buy our own house (which should be happening in about a year). The main thing that blows about renting = you have to run everything by your landlord. Our landlord is amazing, but I really doubt he would let me paint his hardwood floors white or paint/wallpaper every room in this house! Anyway bottom line, I can’t wait to own again! Until then, I will just dream.

{Here are some of my all time favorite paint colors/wall coverings/ideas}

Ok although this space is overall very industrial, I love the fact that they brought their own style to it! Perfect mix of rustic, glam, urban, industrial. One of my favorite things in decorating is to mix styles. It brings something unexpected & unique to the table.

Imperial Trellis stenciled ceiling – One word. GORG. Quite possibly the cutest ceiling in the world.

I would love to do something like this in the nursery or bathroom.

Next up is this vintage glamorous bathroom – Loving the pink walls with white accents. Don’t be afraid to go bold with your paint. With the right accessorizing, it could look amazing beyond words.

Bold pink walls & neutrals. The mirrored bed – to die for.

Wallpapered pink kitchen & ghost chairs. Again super unexpected, yet amazing if done right.

Gorgeous chic trellis stencil.. I have been dying to try this on something. I have been thinking about buying a second hand bookcase for my storage challenged home office. As soon as that happens, I’ll be all over this.

Gross cloth walls, stunning chandelier + white deer head hmmm.. you can’t really go wrong with these items!

Color coordinated bookshelf = A-mazzzz. It’s like where do you get all those pink books though??!

Love this funky geometric wallpaper + the hot pink tissue box doesn’t hurt either. A bright pop of color, is sometimes all you need to give a room that wow factor.

What do you think? Do you have any fun & unique plans for your walls?? Feel free to follow me on Pinterest for more ideas.

Happy Friday!! Xo, Melissa

I will be taking better photos of the entire room real soon! This is just a teaser. Stay tuned..

Wall Stencil Debate

So as you know I plan to paint an accent wall in our living room. Yes I know I am taking forever to do this! I’m busy enough doing real estate full time & keeping up the blog. Sometimes home improvement & DIY projects are the last thing I want to do when I have some down time. But, our new couch and rug are on their way so I need to get it together quick!! (Stay tuned for more on this soon)

I am debating between either painting the wall aqua/turquoise &  adding a stencil pattern to liven things up.. or I could forget paint all together and buy some removable wallpaper

What do you think?

I’m kind of hesitant to commit to stenciling! It just scares me.. what if its crooked? Seems stressful. I just want it to look professional and gorgeous. Tips & Advice on this are welcomed!

Anyway, I found Royal Designs on Pinterest. They have some amazing stencils and so much variety too. Some of my favorites:

I’m 100% doing this zebra stripe stencil in my office or our master bedroom! OH EM GEE I LOVE!

Highly obsessed

Cutting Edge Stencils  have gorgeous modern designs too

Now for some wallpaper ideas:

Grass cloth woven wallpaper could be gorgeous and add a good amount of texture ..

Or of course this gorgeous wallpapered accent wall.. you have seen this on the blog before. Still in love with it.

Imperial trellis wallpaper

Casablanca trellis

Modern tout trellis wallpaper

All images via Pinterest

Removable wallpaper is popping up everywhere lately. Look what I found at Urban Outfitters.

Graham & Brown OR Farrow & Ball are good sources for wallpaper.

SO what would you do? Wallpaper or stencil?

Holiday Tablescape Musts!

Thanksgiving  & Christmas are right around the corner! Oh how I love this time of year. This Thanksgiving we will all be heading over to Clayton’s parent’s house for a fun family Thanksgiving feast.

When it comes to holiday decor & tablescapes I tend to like the unique and unexpected.

Like this idea of using your old wine bottles as candle holders! Brilliant and cost effective!

{Source}

I  think candles are a definite must when it comes to decorating your table for the holidays.

{West Elm}

Colors I normally lean toward are metallic & earth tones. Gold, silver & champagne colors are among my top favorites.

West Elm has some GORGEOUS options for tea light candle holders. Kind of obsessed. Also check out Pottery Barn.

Place cards are another detail that I really like for any special occasion. Small details like these make all the difference!

{Martha Stewart}

There are so many different easy ideas for holiday place cards on Pinterest.

Now let’s talk menus! Personalized menus are a great way to personalize your table and wow your dinner guests.

This one is so cute for Christmas! The candy cane stripes are adorable.

Or you could keep it simple & chic.

Here’s another amazing idea for a menu. Such pretty elements of vintage & rustic style.

Dress up your place settings with simple things like a cinnamon stick, berries & twine. SO simple yet so amazing.

How To Paint Your Floors White.. Holy Amazing.

I NEED these white floors! Obsessed! I first heard of this idea a couple of months ago on the Nate Burkus Show. I was basically glued to the TV.  There is just something about white, I  cannot get enough of it. I’m pretty much drooling over this living room.

{Source}

Painting our floors won’t be happening for awhile, since we plan to rent this place for a couple more years. Once we buy a house, I will be all over this. I guess I will just have to dream for now! Painting your floors white is probably the easiest way to add instant chic to your home. Well maybe not easy but you know what I mean.  Here is a really good extremely detailed tutorial I found over at Door 16.

{Source}

Someone please do this! I can at least live vicariously through one of you. We would love to hear how it goes and see your before & after photos too!

As you can see white painted wood floors go with any decor. Shabby chic, modern chic, vintage, rustic, whatever you like.

It’s wedding time! Only 2.5 months away

So I’ll admit, I’ve been a little off my game with the blogging :/ The truth is I haven’t had a whole lot of extra time + the wedding is so intensely on my mind that I don’t feel inspired to write about anything else. SO I have decided to just embrace it. From now until July 15th you will be hearing a lot more about the wedding. There are still so many decisions to be made.. and I figure, why not share my thoughts and get your opinions.  Plus my BFF/Maid of Honer is probably getting a little sick of me asking her opinion on every little detail!

First things first: the  BM’s outfits. Now this is tricky because I am really particular on what I want the overall look to be. First & foremost, I want my girls to look hot. I’m envisioning something completely different than the traditional bridesmaid looks we have all seen in the past. I want different textures &  colors that all go together. I’m thinking romantic-chic-glam.  The wedding colors are blush/peach tones, gold, silver, creams. This look  is sort of what picturing in my head:

And of course some sassy shoes. Maybe hot pink ? We will have to see though.  Thoughts on the BM dresses?

PS. If you are looking for a DIY home decor fix, my BFF has an incredible blog all about fixing up their home. She has beyond amazing taste & is obsessed with decorating. I swear every weekend she shows me some new crazy amazing project her & her hubby did together. Check it out http://www.346Living.com

Love my MOH!!
